The Journey of The Broken Telephone
For those of you who followed the blogging I did from Synergy, you may remember Dan Cormier’s Broken Telephone Project. We couldn’t reveal much then because Dan and partner Tracy were going to roll out the series on The Cutting Edge Facebook page and who was I to spoil the surprise.
Well Dan has now revealed all the beautiful brooches, their creators and his thoughts on the project and related subjects. The conversation he’s started on his wrap-up post (posted on both Facebook and Flickr) is very important and I would encourage you all to take a minute to read it.
While there, take a look at all the gorgeous pieces that came out of the project.
I was lucky enough to get a close-up look of each of these brooches as I helped pin them on Tracy who became a walking exhibition on the last night of Synergy 3. I’ve held back photos of this unique exhibit until the roll-out was complete. Tracy was easily the best adorned lady of the evening!
We have been following this project since its first posting. Seeing the ensuing pieces is a most rewarding treat for those of us who have decided to participate in this game. We are currently running a pilot round within our guild with 6 members. A show and tell is scheduled for June. Although representing ourselves as the Las Vegas Polymer Clay Guild, most of our members are versed in other medium. Our goal is to showcase the verstility of pc, to share the various methods of polymer clay being employed along side other materials.
It would be great to see Dan’s vision and concept become a permanent feature of Synergy, and perhaps, lesser known artists could participate even if some might not be able to afford the Synergy attendance.
I’d love it if you’d send me photos of your own group’s experiment, Sophia. If it’s a great success, we can feature here.
We would be delighted to share our finished projects with you, slated for a mid June time line. Just let us know where you would like our images to be sent to.
Sophia, that sounds fabulous! I love the idea of showcasing the versatility of polymer within the format of the ‘Telephone’ project. I too would love to see the results.
I’m just realizing as writing this our guild has been doing a loose form of this. We regularly have a ‘challenge’, in which which one item or theme is declared, and all who want to participate produce an item that reflects the challenge. Challenges have included; an empty quail egg as a physical starting point, and a seasonal holiday inspiration for a non-physical inspiration.
Hi Debbie,
When you mentioned quail egg, that shifted some motivating gear for me. Most of us have worked with chicken eggs, but quail egg certainly brings a different focus to scale, design and content. What a great challenge.
You can write and send things to me at sbray@thepolymerarts.com. Thanks!
